In Portuguese.Abstract: This work contains a study of a generic communication model, directly mating local area network interfaces. This model, that we call Abstract Network, has a set of interesting attributes for the development of complex communication protocols in distributed systems. The goal of the Abstract Network is to provide an universal interface, for different networks, obeying to a set of correctness, order and timeliness properties. Together, these two aspects allow the design of simpler and highly portable communication protocols. For efficiency, the implementation of the Abstract Network, includes components from the physical and data link layers. In this work we will identify the main problems in Abstract Network implementation and for each one of these problems we propose solutions, be them completely general or dedicated to specific communication infrastructures. Therefore, this thesis will discuss concepts, properties, design options, architectural issues and implementation of the Abstract Network layer.
