Vielmo: /* Announcements */

We are the Navigators, a research team on distributed systems, their architectures, their algorithms, in their several skins: fault tolerance, real-time, security, and combinations thereof.

We also pursue the quest for the right balance between science and technology. Some people say that Informatics (a.k.a. computer science and
engineering) belongs to a new breed, of what are called techno-sciences.
We believe that techno-scientists should accompany theoretical mastery with a deep knowledge of their environment — computer technology — as well as astro-physicists know the sky, or marine biologists know the sea.

We study new theories to explain distributed systems, and new algorithms to take advantage from them. But we also like to do proof-of-concept experiments about the theory we work on. We try that our papers and theses tell a good story as clearly as possible. We work hard for our demonstrations to be convincing and captivating. Because we believe science is made for others.

Our greatest riches are our culture, and our researchers and students. If you believe in the former, you can become one of the latter. Welcome!
|title=CHARON: A Secure Cloud-of-Clouds System for Storing and Sharing Big Data
|author=Ricardo Mendes, Tiago Oliveira, Vinicius Vielmo Cogo, Nuno Ferreira Neves, Alysson Bessani,
|Project=Project:SUPERCLOUD, Project:BioBankCloud, Project:DiSIEM, Project:IRCoC,
|year=2021
|abstract=We present CHARON, a cloud-backed storage system capable of storing and sharing big data in a secure, reliable, and efficient way using multiple cloud providers and storage repositories to comply with the legal requirements of sensitive personal data. CHARON implements three distinguishing features: (1) it does not require trust on any single entity, (2) it does not require any client-managed server, and (3) it efficiently deals with large files over a set of geo-dispersed storage services. Besides that, we developed a novel Byzantine-resilient data-centric leasing protocol to avoid write-write conflicts between clients accessing shared repositories. We evaluate CHARON using micro and application-based benchmarks simulating representative workflows from bioinformatics, a prominent big data domain. The results show that our unique design is not only feasible but also presents an end-to-end performance of up to 2.5x better than other cloud-backed solutions.
|Objectives=The objectives of this research line encompass the study of models, algorithms and platforms, which take into account the requirements of several classes of applications, with the aim of ensuring timely and safe operation. One of the major challenges to these objectives consists in assuming that applications, despite these demanding goals, can operate in open and unpredictable environments, like the Internet. The design of dependable and real-time applications is traditionally difficult, if not impossible, in this kind of environments. It is proposed to deal with this question in the context of intermediate or partial synchrony models, and by fitting the model and the resulting architectures with the appropriate paradigms and devices, namely accurate environment monitoring and quality of service (QoS) adaptation.
|Objectives topics=* study of models, algorithms and platforms, yielding timely and safe operation
* assume that applications can operate in open and unpredictable environments, but still require some form of timeliness guarantees
* study intermediate synchrony and resilience models with accurate self-monitoring and capable of autonomous behaviour and dependable adaptation
|Objectives=This line of research investigates models, protocols and architectures, that are suitable for applications with strong dependability requirements, namely applications that need to remain operational despite accidental faults or malicious attacks. One of the main challenges that we are currently addressing is the development of "intrusion-tolerance" mechanisms where, instead of preventing attacks from penetrating the system, we intend to be able to detect and recover from intrusions automatically. The kind of environments that are being contemplated include Internet-based distributed applications with large and heterogeneous populations, mobile networks and computing with small hand-held devices, scalable servers either supporting distributed transactions or parallel processing, and critical infrastructures.
|Objectives topics=* exploit common ground between classical fault tolerance and security
* apply modular and distrib. fault tolerance techniques to problems in security
* (e.g., distributed intrusion detection; fail-controlled intrusion-resilient engines; malicious-FT communication)
|shortbio=I am a PhD student at the Faculty of Sciences University of Lisbon and I am also a junior researcher at LaSIGE research group. My adivsors are Professor Alysson Bessani and Professor Nuno Neves.
My mains research interests are Intrusion-tolerance, Diversity and Rejuvenations. I am also interested in topics such as Advanced Persistent Threats, DDoS attacks, Privacy concerns and Smart-grids security.
In 2011 I have finished my M.Sc on Diversity Management in Intrusion Tolerant Systems, advised by Professor Alysson Bessani and Professor Nuno Neves. My thesis' contribution was a study on operating system vulnerabilities that showed that there is empirical evidence supporting the idea that the use of different operating systems on a replicated system makes the system more resilient.
In 2008, while finishing my bachelor, I became a junior member of LaSIGE. I have contributed to FOREVER, advised by Professor Paulo Sousa and Professor Alysson Bessani. I have implemented a replicated system using virtualization (Xen Hypervisor) with different operating systems, and also a proactive recovery mechanism to replace the virtual machines with differente operating systems.
|abstract=We initiate the study of auditable storage emulations, which provide the capability for an auditor to report the previously executed reads in a register. We define the notion of auditable register and its properties, and establish tight bounds and impossibility results for auditable storage emulations
in the presence of faulty base storage objects. Our formulation considers registers that securely store data using information dispersal (each base object stores only a block of the written value) and supporting fast reads (that complete in one communication round-trip). In such a scenario, given a
maximum number f of faulty storage objects and a minimum number τ of data blocks required to recover a stored value, we prove that (R1) auditability is impossible if τ ≤ 2f; (R2) implementing a weak form of auditability requires τ ≥ 3f + 1; and (R3) a stronger form of auditability is impossible. We also show that (R4) signing read requests generically overcomes the lower bound of weak auditability, while (R5 and R6) totally ordering operations or using non-fast reads enables strong auditability. These results establish that practical storage emulations need f to 2f additional objects compared to their original lower bounds to support auditability.
|abstract=The vast datasets produced in human genomics must be efficiently stored, transferred, and processed while prioritizing storage space and restore performance. Balancing these two properties becomes challenging when resorting to traditional data compression techniques. In fact, specialized algorithms for compressing sequencing data favor the former, while large genome repositories widely resort to generic compressors (e.g., GZIP) to benefit from the latter. Notably, human beings have approximately 99.9% of DNA sequence similarity, vouching for an excellent opportunity for deduplication and its assets: leveraging inter-file similarity and achieving higher read performance. However, identity-based deduplication fails to provide a satisfactory reduction in the storage requirements of genomes. In this work, we balance space savings and restore performance by proposing GenoDedup, the first method that integrates efficient similarity-based deduplication and specialized delta-encoding for genome sequencing data. Our solution currently achieves 67.8% of the reduction gains of SPRING (i.e., the best specialized tool in this metric) and restores data 1.62x faster than SeqDB (i.e., the fastest competitor). Additionally, GenoDedup restores data 9.96x faster than SPRING and compresses files 2.05x more than SeqDB.
|abstract=The vast datasets produced in human genomics must be efficiently stored, transferred, and processed while prioritizing storage space and restore performance.
