Abstract: Small scale embedded systems and their interconnection constitutes an hot topic in nowadays. With the technological evolution achieved in recent years, there is the possibility of having a diversity of pervasive applications with every increasing requirements. But, in order to fulfill this potential, many research work is still needed. In this paper we give an overview of the main characteristics and limitations of these systems and highlight some areas of related research that need to be addressed in order to satisfy applications requirements. We briefly present solutions and ongoing work that we are doing in operating system support for concurrency, real-time, power management, and study and analysis of several different communication technologies to interact with embedded systems.
